Stokes, English Vernacular Script, ca 990–ca 1035, Vol. 2 (PhD Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006)

This hand has a neat, orderly aspect, a level cue-height, and somewhat rounded but relatively narrow letters. Most of the letter-forms are similar to those of G.355-1, but this hand is less stiff, less upright, and can be backward-leaning. Ascenders are shorter or the same length as minims and have small flat-topped wedges. Descenders are shorter again and are straight. Minims have small wedges and small horizontal feet. A rounded but essentially teardrop-shaped a was used throughout, the back of which is angled at about 70–80°. A similar form was used for æ, the hook of which is rounded and the tongue thin, straight, and rising. Round c is found with a short hook and longer lower curve. The back of d is short and the letter essentially bilinear. The back of e is fairly straight, angled at about 60–80°, quite long, and extends beyond the hook in a small horn. The hook itself is fairly rounded but squinting, and the tongue is high, rising, straight, and thin. The tongue of f is long and flat, and the hook short. The top of g is flat, the mid-section hangs from the centre, is rounded, and bulges out to the left, and the tail is curved around in a small and nearly closed loop. The shoulders of h, m, n, and r are all quite rounded, starting just below cue-height and turning into a vertical or backward-leaning down-stroke. Low s was used throughout, the hook being quite short. The conventional distinction was usually followed between þ and ð. The back of ð is fairly long, somewhat concave up, and angled at about 45°, and the through-stroke is high, hooked down, and does not extend to the left of the back. Straight-limbed y was used, both with and without dots; the left branch curves left and the right is hooked in the same direction. The top of 7 is hooked up on the left and rises slightly; the down-stroke is angled slightly left.
