Stokes, English Vernacular Script, ca 990–ca 1035, Vol. 2 (PhD Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006)

This forward-leaning hand was written with a thin pen and seems to have been written quite quickly. Ascenders are long and slightly clubbed or have very small wedges. Descenders are straight, and minims have wedges and either very small ticks for feet or no feet at all. The form of a is close to Caroline except that the back does not really extend beyond the body and so there is no head. A similar, teardrop shape was used for æ, the hook of which is low and rounded, and the tongue long and quite steeply rising. The back of d is fairly long and concave down but does not rise much above cue-height. Round e was used, the hook and tongue like æ. The top of g is flat, and the mid-section hangs from the centre and is approximately vertical, then turns right at the base-line and extends horizontally, and the tail curves back into either a closed loop or an open hook ticked up at the tip. The scribe used þ once and ð never, and the body of the former is small and somewhat angular. Caroline f, s, r, and s+t ligatures were all used instead of Insular forms.
